Who is Shubman Gill?

Shubman Gill is an Indian right-handed opening batsman who plays for Punjab in Domestic Cricket. He made his debut in international cricket for the Indian cricket team against New Zealand on 31 January 2019. He also plays for Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League ( IPL ).

Shubman Gill Biography

Shubman was born on 8 September 1999 in Fazilka, Punjab. His father, Lakhwinder Singh, was a farmer, he also wanted to become a cricketer, but he could not become a Cricketer, so he wanted his son to grow up to become a cricketer. 

Gill’s father says that Shubman started playing cricket from the age of 3, he used to sleep by keeping his bat with him.

Seeing Shubman’s passion for cricket, his father, along with his family shifted to a rented house in Mohali near the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium.

Career

He scored two unbeaten centuries while playing for Punjab in the Under-16 match in the Vijay Merchant Trophy. Then, he scored 351 runs in the Punjab Inter-District Competition.

On 25 February 2017, he made his debut in List A cricket in the 2016–17 Vijay Hazare Trophy. On 17 November 2017, he made his first-class debut against Bengal for Punjab in the 17–18 Ranji Trophy, scoring a half-century.

In the 2018 IPL auction, Kolkata Knight Riders bought him for 1.8 crores in January 2018. On 14 April 2018, he made his IPL debut for Kolkata Knight Riders.

In the 2018 -19 Ranji Trophy, playing for Punjab, against Tamil Nadu, in December 2018, he scored a double century in first-class cricket with 268 runs. He scored 148 from 154 balls against Hyderabad in the next match of this tournament. In the 2018-19 Ranji Trophy, he scored 728 runs in 5 matches.

In 2019 IPL, he was awarded the Emerging Player Award. He was selected as the captain of the team in the 2019-20 Deodhar Trophy and 2019-20 Duleep Trophy.

International Cricket

He was selected as the vice-captain for the 2018 Under-19 Cricket World Cup. He was the leading run-scorer in the tournament with 372 runs, for which he was selected as the Player of the Tournament. The International Cricket Council named him Rising Star of the Squad.

He made his debut in international cricket in the fourth ODI match against New Zealand on 31 January 2019 at Seddon Park, Hamilton.

At the age of 19, he scored 204 runs in a match against West Indies A in December 2019 and became the youngest batsman to score a double century in India.

On 26 December 2020, he made his debut in a Test match against Australia.
